Step one: Quit your 9–5

Image from Canva

I quit my 9–5 to write full-time on Medium.

Earlier this week I detailed the process of making that decision. I journeyed from a USA Today affiliate reporter to the Army, back to USA Today and finally to Medium; a place that is increasingly feeling like home.

However, fellow writer Ryan DeJonghe — the king of making insightful and witty posts on LinkedIn — called me out in the comments. He said he wanted to know the nitty-gritty of how I can survive on income from Medium alone. …

What else is Cardano capable of?

Cardano (ADA), the first proof-of-stake blockchain platform moved into the third position of the overall crypto market cap last week.

And now following a recent update to Cardano’s blockchain dubbed the “Mary Hard Fork” it could be the next cryptocurrency to explode and join the ranks of Bitcoin and Ethereum in the thousands of dollars.

At the time of this article, Cardano is trading at $1.22. ADA has surged 2,440% in the past year.

While the rest of the cryptocurrency market was crashing last week — and is still crashing with Bitcoin down $10,000 — Cardano broke the trend and…

“You’re going to need more coffee”

Starting a blog can be the best idea of your life. It was for me. But it didn’t start out that way; it was once the worst decision.

One year ago I helped create Yard Couch with two of my best friends from college. When we started out we didn’t even know what to name our website. We barely had any ideas at all. We were losers. Passionate losers.

Everything changed as we continued to learn and put the work in. Earlier this week we just eclipsed 1,000 followers on Medium, which is just wow. No words. …

11 cups of coffee later

The Beatle’s “Helter Skelter” playing in the 6 o’clock hour could mean only one thing: It’s time for battle.

I pullover my favorite pink sweatshirt and desperately start funneling Café Bustelo into the coffee maker. I don’t know what I’ll encounter today. All I can hope for is that I don’t misspell strong for “stong.”

Writing is a discipline like anything else. If you do it every day, you will get better. The easiest way to do this is to create a routine. And it does not need to look pretty.

This is what Hunter S. Thompson’s routine looked like…

From 9–5 to Freedom

Image from Canva

2020 was the best year I ever had. Spiritually, physically, emotionally — I felt at my top.

Leading up to 2020 I quit my job working at the top newspaper in New Jersey, which happened to be an affiliate of USA Today. The 9–5 was killing me. For the first time in my life, I was depressed. I didn’t think I was a good writer, and sitting at a desk for eight hours, five days a week felt like slow-motion suicide.

This needs to be said about the 9–5 horror show:

  • The 9–5 promotes horrible physical fitness. As a lifelong…

New updates from one of the fastest-growing publications

Yard Couch began as fellow editor Cody Collins’ dream.

Cody is an entrepreneur at heart, and like any entrepreneur worth their salt, he recruited based on who would be the best in a role, and let them go to work. Luckily I happened to be one of those people.

Now here we are less than one year later and one of the fastest-growing publications this year. We’re 100 writers strong with stories that have impacted thousands worldwide.

It’s crazy.

Now that Yard Couch has grown and we have a much better idea of the direction we want to take with…

I just lost thousands from it…

There are two feelings you will always get as an investor: Fear of missing out on investments that exploded like GameStop or Bitcoin. The second is regret from losing money. It doesn’t even have to be a lot.

The latter is so powerful an emotion that some have sadly even killed themselves over it.

Please — especially if you’re just getting started with investing — only invest what you can afford to lose. Don’t stake your entire life on something that could ruin it. It’s not worth it.

I learned this lesson recently. I lost a lot of money investing…

It could be your best side hustle in 2021

I had my quarter-life crisis in 2020.

COVID-19 hit America like a ton of bricks and I’d just left the Army without any job insight. Life sucked. I felt lost. It’s not fun to live life when everything feels like chaos.

My biggest problem was I didn’t know how to earn money. I was a wage slave. Passive income was a myth. A fairy tale that internet celebrities tell average shmucks like me.

Well, I was wrong. And it took my sister, Ariella McCall, to show me that.

Here’s a dirty little secret: Making money today is easier than it’s…

Let me drop a 50 bomb on this one

Likes are meaningless.
Subscribers are yesterday’s news.

Claps are everything.

The difference between 49 and 50 claps is massive. When someone gives me 49 claps I think they hate me. This person — if you can call them that — went out of their way just to stop at the full 50. You know who you are. I can’t sleep at night because of you.

This is why I think we should start a petition to run claps like a Patreon account. You know, something like this:

👉10 claps = You’re on your way. But it’s not good enough. …

Embrace the suck

Accept failure. Enjoy it even. Embrace the suck, for the suck is part of the process.” — AJ Jacobs, journalist

When I trained for Army OCS, I got into the best shape of my life. I could deadlift 365lbs, run a sub-six-minute-mile, and did hill sprints for fun. Ok, they weren’t that fun.

All that said, I told myself once this Army stuff was over, I’d sink back into old habits and likely let myself go a little. I didn’t want to keep the pedal to the metal for fitness especially when achieving the status quo is much easier.
